Adolescents are renowned for bad behaviour, anger and irritability. They may sleep too much, are often tired and may perform badly at school . They may have difficulty learning. The Paill Spectrum theory says that these events may not be due to their hormones: oestrogen and testosterone.
Paill Spectrum suggests that it is possible to improve behaviour, to improve learning and school performance.

Adolescent Behaviours . . . . .
Erasmus : All too often we accept the difficulties of adolescence as a rite of passage, something everyone must go through. Behaviour that is therefore by default normal.
Dr Xxxxx tells the story of one mother who came to see the good doc with the the surly teenager in tow. He was aggressive at tea time. He would answer back, He would not listen to anyone and was not polite at all. His school performance was starting to deteriorate badly.
Dr Xxxxx performed an assessment and looked at the Paill Spectrum risk factors. One glaringly necessary intervention was that the teenager was recommended to start on a wheat free diet. Mum and teenager returned after four weeks. Mum was shocked by the changes. The teenager would say politely to her, " Would you mind if I leave the table now Mum. I've finished dinner". He became polite and considerate of others. He was no longer irritable and surly. The change was so startling that she decided to test the entire family and then to start all gluten intolerant family members on a diet and to use vitamin and mineral supplements in all family members, following Dr Xxxxx's advice.
Erasmus : This example shows how irritability, anger and bad behaviour can be altered. Even in teenagers with no obvious medical diagnosis, just bad behaviour. The Paill Spectrum theory says that it is possible to change this teenager's behaviour because there is in fact a "reason" for the bad behaviour. The mechanism of the behaviour change is based on the Paill Spectrum disease model.
The key issue is you can do something if you know what needs to be done.
Adolescent behavioural changes may be due to a medical condition. Typical bad behaviours include anger, violence, irritability, rage, vandalism, and relationship problems. Other symptoms of the syndrome include chronic fatigue, tiredness, sleepy, memory loss, jitters and panics, anxiety attacks, dizziness or loss of balance, aches and pains such as sore elbows, sore chest, abdominal pain, sore backs of knees, sore Achilles tendons, sore and stiff hands.
Contemporary Medical Practice Research
Purpose of Study: Behavioural changes in adolescents presenting in a suburban Medical Practice can be influenced by medical and nutritional therapies. Back to Adolescent Behaviour top
To allow health and educational workers to identify a symptom cluster characteristic of potentially treatable adolescents with behavioural changes.
Long term work with Medical Practice patients has allowed identification of a characteristic symptom cluster. Longitudinal case control observations of these identified patients has further identified consistent patterns of pathology testing and responses to treatment.
This symptom cluster in adolescents consists of:
Fatigue, Sweaty hands, Abdominal Pain, Loss of Balance. A characteristic learning disability may also be present. Many of the adolescents also show irritability, poor memory and concentration, episodes of anger and deteriorating school performance. Back to Adolescent Behaviour top
These basic symptoms form a distinct reliably recognisable case description.
Illness appears over a very long time and very gradually, though may be exacerbated substantially by the appearance of puberty.
The symptom cluster is associated with a characteristic profile of pathology blood test results. The blood tests measure nutrition and inflammation.
The challenge is to diagnose the symptom cluster early and to prevent progressive worsening of the symptoms. Failure to identify affected children results in a very poor outlook for the affected children. Learning disabilities and social complications are common long term difficulties experienced by these adolescents.
Treatment can alter the behavioural problems and improve learning outcomes.
Paill affects anyone and everyone. No exceptions. The results are often not pretty.

DR Xxxxx : The Paill Spectrum model
discusses a new theory to explain bad adolescent behaviour
Adolescent behavioural change or bad behaviour (bad teenagers) may be due to a medical condition defined by specific symptoms and signs : e.g.
Chronic fatigue,
tiredness,
sleepy,
memory loss,
jitters and panics, anxiety attacks,
dizziness or
loss of balance,
aches and pains such as sore elbows, sore chest, abdominal pain, sore backs of knees, sore Achilles tendons, sore and stiff hands.
Dyslexia is more likely in affected adolescents.
The bad behaviour may be treatable. Puberty and hormones (oestrogen or testosterone)may be a trigger factor but not causative for bad behaviours.
.
Paill Spectrum suggests very specific symptoms, signs, diagnosis & treatment.
Many of the symptoms are not recognised often as being related.
Doctors can change many aspects of the disease or illness.
Erasmus : Bad behaviour is often blamed on bad upbringing, poor opportunities and life difficulties. Irritability, violence, anger, mood swings, learning difficulties, school problems may however may have other contributing factors in their genesis. Factors that most people don’t realise that something can be done about, using medications and simple nutritional changes, not just punishment and education. In the Paill Spectrum model of disease, it becomes apparent that in fact the perpetrators may be the real victims.

Kinkajou: This page has focused on aspects of behaviour and illness such as:
adolescent bad behaviour,
being angry,
irritability
sleep too much,
fatigue, including chronic fatigue
abdominal pain, often nothing being able to be found by doctors
learning disability,
puberty related mood disorders,
balance problems often seen as clumsiness in the young
DR Xxxxx : The Paill Spectrum diagnostic and therapeutic model allows:
signs an symptoms to be assessed by a doctor or other trained person ,
treatment to be prescribed,
progress to be confirmed by a blood test
