School and Learning Difficulties

Erasmus Erasmus :Failing at school is all too easily blamed on the teachers, the kids being stupid or a failure on the part of the parents.

Dr XxxxxDR Xxxxx : The Paill Spectrum model of disease says that one of the most important factors in education is how illness affects the minds and memory of the children in the classroom. Scrambled memory due to neural short circuits in the Paill Spectrum model is a far better explanation for the deficits observed in children at school. Children can't remember sequences of symbolic logic ( e.g. Numbers are a perfect example of independent logic symbol sequences). this leads to problems reading, problems writing and problems learning. How can you learn to read when "bat tad dat pat bot tod pot top" all look the same to your pattern recognition senses in your brain. Words begin to blur into each other and spelling becomes difficult. B vs P vs D (bpd) all look much the same and significant neural processing cycles need to be used by the child's brain to differentiate these letters when a norma brain recognizes the pattern instantly and perfectly.

Erasmus Erasmus : Using the Paill Spectrum model, means that the progression of the learning problems and school difficulties or dyslexia can be altered. The future can be as you chose to make it for yourself or your children. Normal non-medical parents can change many aspects of their children's symptoms and signs of educational failure. An understanding of the process involved in causing these deficits in the children suggests new quick and easy assessment techniques that can be used to diagnose and to monitor progress of the disease over months to years.

Kids Falling Behind at School?

Kinkajou Kinkajou : If your children are doing badly at school, in this day and age, everyone looks for someone to blame. Common statements would be:

Very few people consider the problems from the child’s perspective. In the Paill Spectrum scenario: Yes, the child is not learning, but No its not really anyone's fault. Furthermore a number of simple strategies can make a big long term difference to the child's success at school, in learning and in reading.

Some children have severe memory problems. Other children have problems recognizing words, have poor spelling and often substitute letters. Many children fail to succeed because circumstances do not allow them to succeed.

Dr XxxxxDR Xxxxx : How do I Know if my Child has a Problem?

Commonly, many children develop failures in brain processing of information. For example, children may often be given complex instructions of which they can only remember to do the last thing they have been told, having forgotten what the rest of the instructions were. An example, I saw once was a child who was wandering around the classroom annoying other children and was receiving detentions and punishments for his behavior. The mother said that the teacher had told the child to open his exercise book, get a pencil from the back of the room and then answer the questions on the blackboard. Oh, yes, you’ll need the English textbook to read the story.

Consider these instructions from the child’s point of view. All they remember is that they need to answer the questions from the blackboard. They don’t know what it is that they need to answer the questions about because they either have not linked the story they have been reading with the questions on the blackboard or did not remember enough of the story they have been reading to realize that the questions on the blackboard relate to this particular story. Alternatively, their word recognition is poor so that they are completely confused as they don’t understand the story at all.

They don’t know that they have to open the exercise book so don’t know where to write the answers down. They don’t have a pencil in any case.

These children are unable to process instruction sequences, either in memory or in memory sequences. This process in the Paill Spectrum theory is likely to be reversible.

What does this child do at this point in time? (Having received the complex list of what to do?). Exactly what the child does in fact do. Wander around the room annoying other kids because they have become completely lost in terms of what they are supposed to do.

They are not bad kids. They are kids with very severe unrecognized problems.

Dr XxxxxDR Xxxxx : How Can I Assess This Type of Problem in A Child?

The traditional assessments of this learning difficulty involves a complex assessment of a number of learning skills and takes a trained health professional at least an hour to administer. Fees involved are often high. The result is "sort of useful " but nothing really can be done specifically to fix the problems found. Many specialists assess the child and strange descriptive terms like “dyspraxia” may finally be settled on as a diagnosis. Every one seems to find diagnosis difficult and there don't seem to be any specific treatments.

The Paill Spectrum disease model proposes a "rapid screening test" able to be administered by an untrained person and able to be administered to an entire classroom or group of children in minutes. There are very specific patterns of response that emerge when these tests are done.

The test is a number recall test, not a spelling or word recall test. There are good but simple reasons for this. In words there are complex sets of rules that may predict what letters should appear in a word. In number recall, every number is an independent number. It is just as likely that any number can be in any position, so that pattern recognition or recall or learning is not tested. What is tested is innate or “brain hard wired” speech symbol processing ability.

There are a number of therapies. Even something as simple as ensuring that the child takes a vitamin tablet every day can result in substantial improvement in test scores over a number of months.

Strangely, there are a number of other ancillary effects often noticed with time. Children become less moody and impulsive. Their behavior is better. They get on better with their piers and with their siblings and with their parents. They will often fight a lot less.

In seeing these types of response, it becomes obvious that there is something strange going on in these children. The problem is easily recognized if the symptoms are known.

The Paill Spectrum model of disease describes a specific group of symptoms of signs that can be used to predict wellness or unwellness. There are also specific blood tests that show very specific patterns of abnormality and of response to treatment.

Simple treatments if they follow the Paill Spectrum treatment model, can make a substantial difference to the health status of the child over months. Even simple nutritional changes such as making the child take a good quality multivitamin every day can make a difference to the child’s long-term health status.

The child’s memory, learning and behavior all improve. This improvement is generally obvious to teachers, parents, siblings and acquaintances. The improvement can be dramatic. I particularly remember one father who summed up the situation nicely: in very ordinary language. He said, ” He’s not an effing pain in the arse anymore”.

This type of improvement can be very obvious when appropriate therapy is instituted.

Erasmus Erasmus : The Paill Spectrum model says Dyslexia is an easy condition to diagnose and treat. :-& Most doctors would reliably miss every case they see. Using the Paill Spectrum model, a diagnosis can be made in minutes by parents or teachers and even doctors. Currently, specialist neuropsychiatrists document the children's deficits, ( brain damage in the Paill Spectrum model), and still miss the key deficits of the diagnosis of dyslexia. Most doctors and psychologists have no understanding of what is going on in the children's heads and so are not even aware of what clinical features are critical in making the diagnosis. Dyslexia is usually regarded as a condition where children cannot read or write. But in the Paill Spectrum model there is a specific reason that the children cannot read or write. This is related to memory dysfunction and cross linking in symbolic speech processing in the brain of the victims.

Dr XxxxxDR Xxxxx : Dyslexia: Children with dyslexia, learning difficulties, spelling problems, maths problems, developmental delay, school problems may be suffering from the treatable medical condition Paill Spectrum. Other terms used to describe this condition may include language difficulties and learning disability in children, poor memory, disability, reading difficulties, spelling errors, writing problems or difficulties, word recognition failure, unable to read or auditory processing deficits

Other Symptoms are chronic fatigue, tiredness, sleepy, memory loss, dizziness or loss of balance, clumsiness, easy bruising, aches and pains such as sore elbows, sore chest, abdominal pain and sore Achilles tendons.

Nutritional therapy alone can result in substantial improvements in performance over 3-6 months in the school performance.

Remedial teaching, tutoring and extra study are the only "current" accepted treatments for the condition dyslexia. Often the children are just regarded as naughty and stupid, as their memory problems are not appreciated. Speech therapy may have a role in the treatment of these children but does not address the underlying problems.

Erasmus Erasmus : Many children have learning difficulties. Generally most people think that they are stupid. It is far more likely that they have memory dysfunction or process dyslexia affecting their ability to learn. What this means is that some kids can look at a spelling list for 5 minutes and get them all right the next day. Some kids can try to memorize their spelling for hours, and the next day still get many of the words mis-spelt wrongly. Up till now, the only path available to these children has been to educate themselves in manual trades, where the learning part of the brain is NOT the speech and language centre ( Dr Xxxxx calls this the symbolic speech processing centre), that is so badly damaged by the Paill Spectrum infection..

Dr XxxxxDR Xxxxx : Some children find learning spelling, maths and reading very difficult due to the inability of their brains to process the patterns of "words" on a page that represent concepts. We discuss the use of number recall to test children for damage. However, some teachers tell me that there is an easier way to diagnose these kids. Just look around the room and spot the kids with the lights out and no one home.

Dr AXxxxx Dr AXxxxx : Those medical bumblers can't recognise brain damage when they see it. Small wonder that they fail to help these kids. Trying to educate a child with a progressive brain damage syndrome, is essentially a lost cause.
