Insomnia or Sleep Disorders. . . . . .
Erasmus : Cannot sleep : Sleep problems are usually treated by sleeping tablets (medication: valium, oxazepam, diazepam), or taking alcohol at bedtime. There may be real medical reasons why sleep is interrupted in many people. There are differing types of sleeplessness due to different underlying mechanisms or illness, depending on the stage of illness as suggested by the Paill Spectrum model of disease. Many medicines may interrupt the symptoms of sleeplessness by changing chemical nerve brain transmission.
Insomnia symptoms and causes plus treatments and possible cures are discussed. A new theory for the cause of insomnia is presented.
DR Xxxxx : Currently, the majority of people with sleep disturbance do not have any recognizable. cause of their problem. There is a distinction made between primary sleep problems and sleep problems occurring in context of a mental illness. Sleep disturbance is very common in the context of mental illness such as Mood disorders, Schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders.
Sleepiness and sleeplessness are more common in the older age groups. The sleep volition disturbances such as night terrors, sleepwalking are more common in the younger age groups 4-12 years old. In many of these disorders, there is a familial predisposition, but data from twin studies often shows inconsistent results regarding the influence of genetic factors.
(Twin studies follow up what medical conditions develop in sets of identical twins. If genes alone are responsible, both twins will develop the same medical problems at the same time. If environment is responsible, some twins may develop the problem and some will not.)

DR Xxxxx : Sleep problems or insomnia are regarded as a normal part of life. The presence of sleep problems may be associated with other symptoms such as chronic fatigue or tiredness, memory loss, jitters and panics, anxiety attacks, dizziness or loss of balance, aches and pains such as sore elbows, sore chest, abdominal pain, sore backs of knees, sore Achilles tendons, sore and stiff hands. Sleep problems may form part of a treatable medical condition.

Erasmus : The Paill Spectrum model pioneered by Dr. Xxxxx suggests that many idiopathic types of sleep disturbance are caused by infection with the Paill Spectrum organism. The presence of the organism can be detected by specific blood tests, responds to specific antibiotics, (documentable by an IgG / IgM response to those same antibiotics) and is associated with other characteristic symptoms unique to the Paill Spectrum organism. These other symptoms will also improve subtly and slowly but definitely with Paill Spectrum treatment.
Many Sleep medications are only useful in the short term treatment of sleep disturbance. It is critical to treat people with effective therapy, not just symptomatic antiepileptic medication, or drugs. Medicine for “symptoms” does not change the progress of the disease.
Sleep Disturbance may occur in any Wave of Paill Spectrum Infection. :-|
Patients often experience autonomic ("automatic" nervous system) activation. This can result in agitation and increased alertness and wakefulness and a reduced experience of need for sleep.
If an immune crisis occurs, this behaviour will rapidly be replaced by the patient sleeping all the time, sleeping through the day and appearing somnolent (sleepy) or flat (unemotional) throughout the day.
With resolution of the crisis (untreated), the sleep disturbance will return to the activated mode (i.e. less sleep over two weeks to two months depending on the extent of the Paill Spectrum infection). :-)
Patients often experience hypersomnolence with an increased need for sleep. (Hypersomnolence literally just means "extra sleepiness") Patients report that they feel better if they have a good sleep. Some patients will begin to daytime nap. Natural aging generally describes a reduced need to sleep over years, with retention of the usual alertness/ sleepiness pattern. A slow increase in need for sleep over years is very characteristic of Paill Spectrum infection.
In this level (wave) of infection in children, sleep disturbances occur. Nightmare disorder = formerly known as Dream Anxiety Disorder, Sleep Terror Disorder, Sleepwalking Disorder may be second wave associated of Paill Spectrum infection. It would be expected that the particular neural circuits controlling sleep that are involved, are fairly localised, as there is generally reported to be a similar incidence of more recognisable Paill Spectrum phenomenon in this group of children, as in the general population.
Restless leg syndromes, jerking movements in sleep not associated with rapid change in sleep state are probably also second wave Paill Spectrum phenomena. :-]

Pain or discomfort are frequent accompaniments. People awake and are often unable to find a comfortable position to sleep.
This pattern of discomfort may be chronic or may be acute.
Spring Flares cause sudden onset severe acute episodes of pain and discomfort associated with considerable general unwellness. This type of problem often resolves over about two months. The most common trigger is the arrival of warmer weather (heat), but other nutritional or antibiotic trigger factors are common causes as well.
A number of patients do not experience pain but do experience a type of wakeful restlessness that disturbs sleep. The patient in this circumstance will often be tired, go to bed, and have no trouble falling asleep but awake for no obvious reason during the night. Many people will go to the toilet even though there is no obvious need and then find that they just can’t get back to sleep.
So Paill Spectrum can cause a number of patterns of sleep disturbance. The waves of Paill Spectrum symptoms can occur out of sequence. It is possible to have symptoms of a number of different "waves" of Paill Spectrum sleep disturbance, at the same time. :->>
How Successfully can you treat these Symptoms via the Paill Spectrum Model?
How Treatable are These Sleep Disorders?
1st Wave Paill Spectrum sleep disorders: respond well
2nd wave: Childhood Parasomnias: respond poorly to treatment though treatment often gives obvious short-term changes in the incidence on the problem. The problem will usually not respond 100%, though perhaps parental unwillingness to pursue intensive treatment at an early enough stage may be the underlying root of the problem. The prognosis for children in this category appears to be no worse than for other people in the population, which suggest that the area controlling sleep activation in the Parasomnias, is highly localised and not an important part of general brain function.
2nd wave Hypersomnia with / without mental disorder: respond well to Paill Spectrum therapies or treatments.

3rd wave Sleep disturbance: Usually easy to improve in the short term, especially where there is a spring flare

DR Xxxxx : An interesting observation: Many people with aches and pains such as in Fibromyalgia who receive pain medications such as low grade narcotics, find very little relief or that they need larger and larger doses of medications to gain relief. Once a Paill Spectrum therapy has been initiated, (generally antibiotics are almost always required in fibromyalgic patients), people find that they have satisfactory and long term relief of their pain condition without a need for escalation of pain medication dosed.
Dr. Xxxxx has been able to undertake only partial follow up of compatible cases in his practice, so the role of Paill Spectrum in sleep disorders is suggested currently more by theory than by experience.
There are a wide variety of other medications used. Many are accessible over the counter, without prescription. Often any of these medications whether doctor prescribed or obtained OTC (over the counter), are addictive.
Hypersomnia or insomnia may be serious and important symptoms of an important medical condition.
Often much damage has already been done. Without treatment however, this Paill Spectrum condition continues to progress. The next phase of the progression of a long term, Paill Spectrum Illnesses causing sleep disturbance involves a number of possibilities depending on the age and wave status of the Paill Spectrum condition:
Paill Spectrum treatment comes as a package deal. All of the types of nutritional and antibiotic therapy are critical to the long-term treatment success. Bizarre events may occur with treatment, though predominantly with second line therapies. The therapies promoted on this web site are freely promoted because they are the safest first line treatments that can change the course of the Paill Spectrum Illnesses causing sleep disturbance. The Paill Spectrum model of disease as developed by Dr. Xxxxx suggests that these are signposts on the road to recovery, not as reasons to abandon treatment. :~\\
.Symptoms of treated sleep disorders may return in some patients in three to nine months if underlaying risk factors such as nutritional problems remain unchanged.
Insomnia and Sleep Disorder covers a range of terms such as:
Insomnia, Hypersomnia, Sleep Terrors, Sleepwalking, Sleep Apnoea, Hypersomnia
Symptoms include waking up at night, restless legs, jerking and perhaps Fibromyalgia like complaints as a cause of disturbed sleep.
